A city of kings and legends

Kraków and Southern Poland

Kraków is probably one of the first things that come to mind upon hearing the word "Poland". Now the capital of Małopolska, known in English as Lesser Poland, it was once the capital city of Poland and the seat of kings. Nowadays, the city is considered the artistic and cultural centre of the country, described by Pope John Paul II as "the synthesis of everything that is Polish". Architecture, churches in almost every style, cultural institutions, cafés and pubs, create the exceptional character of this place, the ambience that one cannot experience anywhere else in the world. The Royal Castle, which combines buildings from different artistic periods, and the cathedral, whose crypt contains the tombs of Polish kings, reflect the thousand-year history of the Polish state. Kraków is renowned for its magnificent Old Town and the exceptionally well-preserved former Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, the cultural centre of Jewish life in Poland. Until the Second World War, it was home to a thriving Jewish community whose culture, despite the tragic events of history, remains alive today.

But Kraków is just one of the gems of Małopolska, which is a region with an impressive number of monuments, a rich cultural heritage, fascinating traditions and varied natural conditions. A journey to Kraków is also an excellent opportunity to visit places such as the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, Wadowice - the birthplace of Pope John Paul II, or Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains, Poland’s highest mountain range. Southern Poland, including the historic region of Galicia, offers beautiful historic cities such as Tarnów and Przemyśl, as well as numerous castles and palaces, including those in Sieniawa, Krasiczyn and Łańcut. In addition to its historical and architectural attractions, the region is rich in natural treasures, with numerous national parks and mountain areas in the Carpathians offering pristine landscapes for active tourism, including hiking, cycling and canoeing.
