Warmia and Masuria is a historical and ethnographic region in north-eastern Poland and one of Europe’s most distinctive natural areas. Vast forests, numerous nature reserves and unspoilt landscapes contribute to the region’s unique character. Warmia and Masuria, commonly known as the “Land of a Thousand Lakes”, the area contains more than three thousand lakes, including Śniardwy and Mamry, the largest lakes in Poland. The region offers numerous attractions, including Teutonic castles, such as those in Kętrzyn and Lidzbark Warmiński, the Boyen Fortress in Giżycko and the Baroque sanctuary in Święta Lipka. Historic residences include the palaces in Nakomiady and Sztynort, formerly the seat of the Lehndorff family. Masuria is also home to engineering marvels, including the Elbląg Canal, where boats are transported across inclined planes on rail-mounted cradles, and the unfinished Masurian Canal, which was intended to connect East Prussia with the Baltic Sea.
