An extended visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and a stay in Krakow, offers the opportunity to immerse oneself more comprehensively in history.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum is a sombre site, located around 60 kilometres from Kraków in the town of Oświęcim. Auschwitz was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps, which makes it the largest site of this type built and operated by Nazi Germany during World War II. Its most important parts were Auschwitz I (the original main camp, Stammlager) and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, where the vast majority of the gas chambers and crematoria were located. The number of murdered victims reached at least 1.1 million, most of whom were Jews, Poles, Romani and Soviet prisoners of war. Because of its massive scale and systematic methods, the site became known as a "factory of death."
A visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, while deeply solemn and emotionally demanding, is a vital one as it reminds us of one of the darkest periods in human history that we shall never forget.
