Enter the fascinating world of the Wieliczka Salt Mine – an underground labyrinth extending for an incredible 300 kilometres and regarded as a masterpiece of industrial and technical heritage.
Only around 2 kilometres of these impressive passages are open to visitors, but this selected route offers a unique insight into a mine with almost seven hundred years of history. Together with the historic city of Krakow, the salt mine is among the world’s oldest continuously operating mines and has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the Middle Ages, the so-called “white gold” generated one third of the Polish kings’ state revenue and became a symbol of wealth and power. The visit begins 64 metres below ground, reached by descending 378 steps. A fascinating guided route leads through former extraction chambers, mysterious salt lakes and elaborately decorated underground chapels. Particularly impressive is St Kinga’s Chapel, situated 101 metres below ground and measuring 54 by 17 by 12 metres. It is decorated with intricate salt sculptures, detailed reliefs, magnificent chandeliers and statues carved from salt – a true work of art that attracts visitors from around the world.
Famous figures such as Goethe and Balzac were deeply impressed by this wonder of nature and engineering. Although Alfred Döblin described the experience somewhat more soberly, the mine has undoubtedly inspired generations of visitors. J.R.R. Tolkien also visited Wieliczka, and some observers believe that the mysterious atmosphere of the mine may have influenced his famous works in “The Lord of the Rings”.
Wieliczka itself is a charming town near Krakow and can be reached conveniently by “Lux” minibus from Krakow’s main bus station. Services run approximately every 15 minutes to the mine entrance and back, and tickets can be purchased from the driver. Admission to the salt mine, including a guided tour in German, can be booked in advance. Visits are only possible with a guide, and early reservation is recommended.
