Only a few kilometres south of the vibrant city centre, the impressive Benedictine Abbey stands on the picturesque bank of the Vistula River. Founded in the second half of the 11th century, the historic monastery owes its origins to a generous foundation by King Boleslaus the Bold and continues to impress visitors with its fascinating history and architecture.
The Romanesque church at the heart of the monastery was extensively remodelled in the 15th and 17th centuries and today displays magnificent Baroque splendour. Visitors can admire not only the richly decorated Baroque interior but also surviving fragments of the original Romanesque structure and a cloister adorned with remarkable Gothic paintings.
Another highlight is the view from the monastery’s defensive wall, from which the Camaldolese church in Bielany can be seen in the distance. The Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec was once part of a long chain of monasteries and fortified sites along the Vistula, forming an important historical network.
Today, the abbey is not only an architectural gem but also a living cultural centre. It is particularly well known for the organ concerts regularly held here, which attract visitors from near and far. Discover the unique atmosphere and history of this fascinating place.
