Torun, a lively city of around 200,000 inhabitants located approximately 200 kilometres north-west of Warsaw, is one of Poland's most beautiful historic cities. Its remarkably preserved medieval centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Elegant townhouses from different periods and outstanding Gothic buildings define the cityscape. Major sights include the Cathedral of Saints John, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the imposing Old Town Hall and well-preserved sections of the medieval defensive walls.
Torun is also famous as the birthplace of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, whose heliocentric theory transformed our understanding of the universe. His birthplace now houses a museum devoted to his life and scientific achievements.
