Amber, known in Polish as “bursztyn”, is regarded as the oldest currency of the Baltic region and has fascinated people for centuries. Trading caravans of the Roman Empire valued the “Gold of the North” not only as a means of payment but also as a precious material for jewellery. The legendary Amber Room, made from this remarkable natural material, remains missing to this day.
Our programme offers an engaging introduction to the world of amber. Visit the Amber Museum inside the Gothic walls of Gdansk’s former Torture Chamber, where an impressive collection includes some of Poland’s finest amber inclusions. Afterwards, enjoy a demonstration in an amber workshop and see how amber is professionally worked, polished and classified.
The tour concludes at St Bridget’s Church, home to one of Poland’s largest amber altars. This moving gift from the shipyard workers to the Virgin Mary combines history and craftsmanship in a unique way.
