St Maximilian’s Church rises in the middle of Oświęcim’s modern industrial district as an impressive symbol of faith and hope. It is dedicated to Saint Maximilian Kolbe, the exceptional Franciscan friar and martyr, and commemorates his selfless act. Kolbe gave his life at Auschwitz concentration camp by volunteering to take the place of another prisoner condemned to die in a starvation cell. Today, the church stands as a living memorial to courage, compassion and the strength of the human spirit.
