Cruise on the Elbląg Canal

Experience a fascinating cruise on the Elbląg Canal

Duration: approximately 7–8 hours

Travel comfortably from Gdansk to Elbląg, where your journey on the Elbląg Canal begins. This remarkable waterway is both one of Poland’s most scenic routes and a nineteenth-century engineering masterpiece. Built between 1844 and 1858, it overcomes a difference in elevation of 99 metres and connects numerous lakes and towns, from Iława and Ostróda to Elbląg on the Vistula Lagoon.

Its five inclined planes are an innovative alternative to conventional locks. Boats are loaded onto rail-mounted carriages and transported between stretches of water by cable systems and inclined lifts powered by water wheels and turbines. Seeing a boat travel across grass is an unforgettable experience. The approximately five-hour cruise covers the most remarkable section between Elbląg and Małdyty.

The cruise can optionally be combined with a visit to nearby Malbork Castle.
