The Zloty—Poland’s Currency

Poland uses the zloty rather than the euro. The Polish zloty, abbreviated PLN, is divided into 100 groszy.

Coins in common circulation include denominations of 10, 20 and 50 groszy and 1, 2 and 5 zlotys. The 5-zloty coin resembles a 2-euro coin at first glance but is slightly smaller.

Banknotes feature famous Polish rulers:

• 10 PLN: Mieszko I, Poland’s first historic ruler, who was baptised in 966.
• 20 PLN: Bolesław I the Brave, the first crowned king of Poland.
• 50 PLN: King Casimir the Great, founder of the University of Krakow in 1364. The reverse includes references to Krakow and Kazimierz.
• 100 PLN: Władysław Jagiełło, victor at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410.
• 200 PLN: Sigismund the Old, under whom Renaissance Poland experienced a cultural golden age.
• 500 PLN: the highest denomination, introduced into circulation in 2017.

Converting Euros into Zlotys

Exchange rates fluctuate, so current rates should always be checked before converting money. Official reference rates are available from the National Bank of Poland: National Bank of Poland.

Where Can You Obtain Zlotys?

Currency exchange offices: Numerous exchange offices operate in city centres. Compare rates, especially when exchanging larger sums, and confirm both the quoted rate and any commission before completing a transaction.

Cash machines: Krakow has many ATMs operated by different providers. Ask your bank about charges and recommended machines before travelling. Many machines offer English and other language options.

Card payments: Contactless and card payments are widely accepted in shops, cafés and restaurants. When offered a choice of currency at a payment terminal or ATM, check the exchange rate and fees carefully.
