Enjoy a fascinating boat trip from the Green Gate quay in Gdansk, travelling past the historic city centre, the impressive shipyard facilities and the former Polish Military Transit Depot at Westerplatte—the place where the Second World War began. The first shots fired by the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein at 4:47 a.m. on 1 September 1939 marked the beginning of a global conflict. At Westerplatte, you will visit the Guardhouse memorial, which commemorates these dramatic events.
A coach then takes you back to the city and the historic Polish Post Office building. Here, you will hear about the Free City of Danzig and the decisive events that shaped the outbreak of the Second World War in the region. You will also learn about the defence of the Polish Post Office, attacked by the SS Heimwehr Danzig on 1 September 1939.
