"Chopin may be described as the most Polish of composers, the one who perhaps best expresses our soul and is most deeply rooted in our understanding of history. I am thinking particularly of the relationship between Chopin's music and Romanticism, because for Poles Romantic culture is fundamental and in some sense forms the basis of our identity," said Robert Kostro, director of the Museum of Polish History.
The Fryderyk Chopin Museum is located in the historic Ostrogski Palace in central Warsaw and invites visitors to explore the life and work of the legendary composer. Its collection includes personal objects, handwritten letters, photographs, manuscripts and instruments associated with Chopin.
Opened in its modern form in 2010, the multimedia exhibition follows an "open museum" concept, allowing visitors to explore the exhibits at their own pace. Eleven thematic areas cover different stages of Chopin's life. Sound-insulated listening stations make it possible to hear selected piano works in excellent conditions.
Fryderyk Chopin, Warsaw's most famous musical son, spent the first twenty years of his life in the city before leaving Poland. He remains one of the country's most revered artists.
Every five years Warsaw hosts the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, one of the world's most prestigious music competitions. Visitors can also hear Chopin's music at concerts held regularly throughout the city.
