Basic expressions for your journey

Start with the most useful words. Yes is tak, while no is nie. Use please when making a polite request and thank you to express gratitude. A friendly response is with pleasure, and when introducing someone you can say: This is...

Introducing yourself

To introduce yourself, say My name is.... After meeting someone, you may say Pleased to meet you. Ask How are you? and the answer may be Well or Very well.

Greetings and farewells

Greet people with Good morning or Good evening. When leaving, use Goodbye, and before going to sleep say Good night.

Language and nationality

You can state your nationality or ask Do you speak English? If something is unclear, say I don't understand. For important information, ask: Please write it down.

Asking for directions

If you become lost, useful questions include Where is...?, followed by places such as the police station, the street or the hotel. Ask Which way should I go? and listen for directions such as left or right.

Shopping

Ask Where can I buy...? To find out the price, use How much does it cost? or How much do I have to pay?

At the railway station

Ask Where is the railway station?, request a ticket to... and enquire How much is a ticket to...? You can also ask Is the train delayed?

Expressing how you feel

Useful phrases include I am tired, I am hungry and I am thirsty.

At the hotel

Ask Do you have a room available? and choose between a single room, double room or triple room. You may request a room with a bathroom, with breakfast or without breakfast. Ask How much is the room? and request the bill with The bill, please.

At a restaurant

Ask for the menu with The menu, please. Useful expressions include Enjoy your meal, Cheers and The bill, please.

Changing money

When exchanging currency, ask: Please change this into...

At the post office

Ask How much does a letter to... cost? and use words such as postcard, registered letter, express letter and parcel.

Health and emergencies

Ask Where is...? followed by hospital, pharmacy, dentist or doctor. If you are in pain, say It hurts here or I am in pain.

Understanding important signs

Useful words include grocery shop, swimming pool and office, as well as warnings and notices such as danger, open and closed.
