Continue along Kiełbaśnicza Street, sometimes translated as Sausage Street, and discover its fascinating history. On the right, a narrow lane called Jatki opens between the buildings. Its name refers to the butchers’ stalls that existed here as early as the thirteenth century. Despite an early prohibition, butchers gradually constructed homes above their workshops. The surviving buildings date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and now contain lively art galleries combining culture with history. At the end of the lane stands a charming Monument to Slaughtered Animals. Its carefully modelled sculptures of a pig, geese, goats and other animals are especially popular with children and have become one of Wroclaw’s favourite photographic subjects.
Leave the former butchers’ quarter and turn left from Odrzańska Street. After a few steps, turn right into Kotlarska Street, which leads to the second cross street, Kuźnicza Street. At the junction of Kotlarska and Kuźnicza, turn left and continue for approximately 200 metres to reach the lively University Square, another highlight of the tour.
