Centennial Hall, or Hala Stulecia, is an outstanding work of architecture designed in 1913 by the renowned architect and municipal building councillor Max Berg. The reinforced-concrete structure is particularly remarkable for its dome, which has a diameter of approximately 65 metres and, when completed, had the world’s largest span of its kind. It was a pioneering achievement of modern engineering.
The hall was built to commemorate the centenary of the Prussian Wars of Liberation against Napoleon I. It contains 6,000 seats and can accommodate almost 20,000 people when standing areas are used, making it suitable for a wide range of events.
In 2006, Centennial Hall was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of its innovative reinforced-concrete construction and importance to the development of modern architecture.
Another distinctive landmark nearby is the Iglica, a 100-metre steel spire erected in 1948 directly in front of the hall’s main entrance. Together, the two structures form a striking ensemble and an important symbol of Wroclaw’s twentieth-century history.
