Only around 40 kilometres south-west of Wroclaw rises a compact mountain range that is a popular weekend destination for city residents. Its highest and most distinctive summit is Mount Ślęża, reaching 718 metres above sea level.
Between the fifth and eighth centuries Ślęża was a sacred mountain and a centre of sun worship. The area was initially inhabited by communities associated with the Lusatian culture and later by the Ślężanie tribe. The regional museum in Sobótka, the tourist centre of the Ślęża Massif, presents archaeological finds and the history of ancient pagan rituals.
A well-marked hiking trail leads from Sobótka to the summit. Along the route stand enigmatic stone sculptures dating from the period of pagan worship. At the top visitors will find a church, a mountain shelter and an observation tower offering broad views across the surrounding landscape.
Allow approximately four hours for the ascent and descent. The excursion combines nature, archaeology and regional history.
