Holy Cross Church, standing majestically on the lively Nowy Świat thoroughfare—one of Warsaw’s principal promenades—is an outstanding Baroque building of major historical importance. For the city’s residents, the church represents not only architectural beauty but also a moving chapter in Warsaw’s history.
In front of the basilica stands a striking statue of Christ carrying the Cross. After sustaining severe damage in explosions, the figure was placed outside the church and became a powerful symbol of the suffering and resilience of the war-ravaged city.
The church is also an important place of remembrance honouring major figures in Polish history. Most notable is the urn containing the heart of Frédéric Chopin, set into one of the church’s pillars as a quiet expression of the world-famous composer’s deep connection with his homeland.
